Food handling and safety courses for New York workers are available from the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, New York Food Handlers, and the New York State Restaurant Association. Some food handler courses are available online, while others are only available in live classroom settings.
The New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene offers both an online and a classroom program on food protection. The online course is free and available in English, Spanish and Chinese, but there is a cost to take the final exam and receive a certificate. The course consists of 15 lessons and quizzes after each lesson. There is a cost that accompanies the classroom version of the course, which is available in English, Chinese and Korean.
The New York Food Handlers website offers a free online course that guides students through proper food preparation practices. Students who successfully complete the course can print certificates, although these certificates are not substitutes for government-issued food handler permits or licenses.
The New York State Restaurant Association has an NYC Food Handlers and Servsafe Certification course, which is available on location in New York City. The course takes place in 15 hours over five days.
