The term "food alphabet" refers to an alphabetical list of foods, generally one food per letter, and is most commonly used to teach children letters and food word identification. Variations of these alphabets exist that include numerous foods for each letter.
In the most common format for food alphabets the first letter of foods match with ascending letters of the alphabet, such as apple, broccoli, carrot and so forth. Some versions include the phrase "is for" with the letters, such as "a is for apple." Common presentations for the food alphabet include posters, flashcards and books. An additional format consists of providing children with a page listing the letters followed by blanks, requiring the children to fill in a food for each letter.
