FCAT Explorer is a program dedicated to preparation for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Florida has an initiative to improve its public schools teachers and student learning experiences. One component of that initiative is the FCAT.
The FCAT is administered to grades 3 through 11 in the state of Florida. Because of the wide range of ages and grades, different levels of testing are performed, using different methods.
FCAT Explorer's website has many different helpful links, such as FCAT fact sheets, benchmarks, explanations and score histories. Each district's historical scores can be viewed and compared to other districts. Sample test items and information for students and parents are available at the website. An important item is the comprehensive explanation of components for each grade level. Much of this information is also available in Spanish and Haitian Creole.
Using FCAT Explorer, a student is prepared for the FCAT. Components include Reading, Mathematics, and Science. Each component has learning methods specific for each grade level. For instance, a fifth grader can use the Explorer in a handheld game format. A third grader might go on an adventuresome space rescue, while learning reading skills and visiting exotic planets at the same time. A tenth grader then reads passages and answers questions about that passage.
