Examples of characteristics in a person include being tall, well built, pale, dark haired, loving, sincere, adventurous and mean. Characteristics are grouped into physical characteristics, which are a person's physical features, and character traits, which are aspects of the personality. Each group of characteristics has positive and negative characteristics associated with it.
Each person has many physical characteristics relating to different areas of appearance. A person's build is classified as plump, stocky, buff or skinny. A person's height is usually tall, short or average. Complexion characteristics may refer to a person's skin color, such as tan or olive, or any aspects of their skin that stand out, such as freckles or pimples. Hair characteristics refer to hair color or its texture, such as frizzy or straight.
Character traits are part of a person's personality. Positive traits include optimism, happiness and ambitiousness. Negative traits include dishonesty, cruelty and selfishness. Some traits are related to certain stages of life. For example, playfulness is a common trait of children.
Physical characteristics and character traits can both change significantly with age or conscious effort. For example, being educated is a character trait that a person must seek out. People can also change aspects of their physical appearance through hair coloring or plastic surgery.
