What Does ESOL Stand For?

ESOL is an educational term that refers to teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The term normally describes programs that are outside of the traditional preschool through 12th grade learning environment, such as programs for adult learners who want to gain fluency in English.

Some states, such as Florida, use the term ESOL to describe the academic endorsement for public school teachers. ESOL is also sometimes applied to English as a Second Language courses.

ESOL courses generally occur in a community college, online classroom or community program setting. Courses include basic English grammar, vocabulary and common conversational terms and phrases.
