Two equine dentistry schools in the United States are The American School of Equine Dentistry located in Virginia and The Academy of Equine Dentistry located in Idaho. Both programs require academic classes, such as equine anatomy, training in dental equipment operation and studies in equine dentistry.
Equine dental students engage in extensive hands-on learning. The American School of Equine Dentistry course includes three weeks of supervised field work, and The Academy of Equine Dentistry requires 100 hours working with a certified equine dental technician. After completing the academic classes and the field work, students are eligible to take certification examinations to obtain membership in the International Association of Equine Dentistry. The exam consists of a written section, a skull examination and a supervised practical examination on a live horse.
