Cake decorating requires no specific education, but someone who aspires to this trade needs artistic ability and the desire to learn specialized tools and techniques. Some cake decorators with skill but no formal training start from home selling decorated cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and other occasions.
Many cake decorators learn the trade as entry-level workers or apprentices in bakeries, grocery stores, hotels and catering services. Experienced decorators teach skills such as air brushing, piping, crimping, lettering and sugar crafting and the use of specialty ingredients such as gel, icing, fondant, marzipan and chocolate. Other aspiring cake decorators benefit by earning certificates from technical and 2-year schools in pastry arts programs or associate degrees in baking and pastry arts.
