Two popular and well-known choices for online schools, as of 2015, are K12 and Connections Academy. Both online schools are available anywhere in the United States and offer flexible enrollment options.
Enrollment begins by visiting either website and reviewing the options available in the student's state. In many states, there are free public charter schools that partner with these companies and allow parents to enroll their children in these schools at no cost. If this option is available, the child receives all curriculum materials necessary for accessing the program. Parents can fill out the applications online or request them through the mail. The other materials necessary for enrollment depend on the state of residence but typically include things such as the student's birth certificate, immunization record, prior school records or report cards, and any available state assessment results from prior school years.
In places where the public charter option is not available, parents can enroll their children in the private schools offered by these companies. While this requires parents to pay for tuition and materials, it allows far more flexibility in attendance and the time taken to complete coursework. Both schools also allow children to enroll privately in individual courses rather than taking a full course load.
