Jefferson Labs bases its practice tests on information released by the Virginia Department of Education and updates the tests over time as standards change. Practice tests are compiled from databases of questions based on this material. Jefferson Labs has also compiled some questions developed by individual school districts to address newer, more rigorous standards that the Virginia Department of Education has not yet addressed, but practice test users must specifically ask for these question banks to be used. Questions can be sorted to see newer questions only by selecting particular question banks.

Jefferson Labs does not offer SOL practice tests on history and English because these subjects are outside its areas of expertise. All SOL questions and graphics are owned by the Virginia Department of Education. Practice test results can be emailed to the student and/or the teacher upon completion. Teachers also receive online access to their students' practice test results from Jefferson Labs.
