Some common reading assessments include the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), the STAR assessment and the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). Educators use the DIBELS assessment for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, while K-12 students take the STAR and SRI tests.
The DIBELS assessment measures reading skills such as phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, fluency and accuracy with connected text, vocabulary and alphabetic understanding. The STAR test assesses skills in four major areas, and it links prerequisite skills with goals to achieve mastery. Teachers use either the Core Progress or the Core Progress for Common Core version, depending on state standards. The SRI is a research-based assessment that measures reading comprehension.
