Dedication litanies occur in Christian churches during dedication services that place objects in the service of God. Common dedication services that may include a litany include the opening of a new church building or church furniture, such as an altar.
Other objects that may receive a dedication service include church bells, chalices and various objects used by bishops or priests during religious ceremonies.
During a litany, the congregation responds to prompts from the person leading the service either by repeating part of the service leader's dialog or by repeating a single phrase. For a dedication service, a single line often takes a form similar to "we dedicate this building."
