Journeys Common Core, a reading curriculum designed for kindergarten through sixth-grade classrooms, incorporates state Common Core standards to teach reading skills and provide extra intervention for students with reading comprehension issues. It emphasizes close reading and analysis to get students to engage deeply with texts.
Journeys Common Core is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and provides teachers with texts and lesson plans for individual, small-group and large-group instruction. According to the publisher, it encourages students to develop close-reading skills by offering text-based questions that go along with every reading assignment, which are designed to stimulate both personal thoughts and in-class discussions about the text. It also offers accompanying apps, online lessons, and online group exercises to supplement the traditional textbook.
The course is also designed to meet the needs of students who require extra help with reading comprehension. The curriculum includes workbooks called Write-In Readers, which, according to the publisher, provide many open-ended questions and exercises to allow students to practice the fundamentals of reading. Teachers can tailor the questions and exercises they assign to students' individual skill levels.
In addition to providing texts for students, Journeys Common Core comes with a teacher's edition and online videos of demonstration lessons to give teachers ideas for how to use the curriculum in the classroom.
