Nursing and medical terms are usually seen abbreviated, like ADL for activities of daily living, cath for catheter and dx for diagnosis. There are numerous terms that can cover everything from medical instructions to test orders.
Sometimes patients will see terms noted by doctors or nurses on their discharge instructions, using abbreviations or the full terms. Some of these include ABR for absolute bed rest, Ad Lib for as desired and gtt, meaning two or more drops. Doctors and nurses often use the same terms and abbreviations. This is so nurses can easily understand a doctor's orders for her patients and there is only one set of terms to learn. There are variations on these terms, but those generally are limited to a specific organization or portion of the medical field. There are textbooks available for future nurses or those interested in learning medical terminology.
