The University of California at San Francisco provides residency students with fellowships in fields, such as ICU anesthesia, pain medicine anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia and pediatric anesthesia. Washington University in St. Louis is one of the leaders in pediatric anesthesiology and is associated with two area children's hospitals. The anesthesiology residents are grouped based on their fields of interests, which include pediatric, obstetric, organ transplantation and neurological surgery. A simulation center is used for some of Washington University's resident educational programs.
Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland, assigns each new resident to a faculty member for the first month for an introduction to the program and individual teaching. Students get time to research their area of interest and one month rotations in areas like preoperative evaluation, pediatrics and surgical intensive care.
The University of Washington, in Seattle, Washington, has the usual four-year anesthesiology program, as well as a five-year residency program of anesthesiology and critical care.
