Some of Florida's premier charter schools include Heritage Academy, Imagine Charter School at Weston, Terrace Community Middle School, and Archimedean Middle Conservatory. According to the Florida Department of Education, as of 2014, Florida has over 640 charter schools with total enrollment exceeding 251,000 students.
The Heritage Academy, located in Polk County, is Florida's highest-rated charter elementary school, according to rankings from AmericanSchoolChoice.com. Healthy Learning Academy Charter School, Choices in Learning Charter and Pinecrest Academy (North Campus) are also considered some of the best charter elementary schools in the state. Dade County is home to several schools in the top 15, such as Renaissance Elementary Charter School and Mater Academy East Charter.
Terrace Community Middle School is considered the top charter middle school in the state, according to the rankings. Other high performers include schools such as Doral Academy of Technology, International Studies Charter Middle School, Sarasota School of Arts/Sciences and Marco Island Charter Middle. As with the elementary schools, many of the top charter middle schools are located in Dade County, such as Somerset Academy Charter School, Pinecrest Academy Middle School (North Campus), and the Doral Academy of Technology. Florida's charter school saw a decline in performance measurements after the implementation of the Common Core standards but saw less of a decline than the average district school.
