What Does Caption Mean?

A caption is a short explanation that accompanies an article, photograph or illustration. It is also a line displaying the dialogue and description of action situations along the bottom of the screen for a movie or television show. In the legal world, a caption is the title of a document. The word also describes the process of creating one of these labels or titles.

In 1972, the ABC network and the National Bureau of Standards demonstrated a process that embedded closed captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers into one episode of the series "The Mod Squad." This development was furthered by the Public Broadcasting System. That same year, the PBS show "The French Chef" became the first series to regularly include closed captioning.
