Can a Thesis Statement Be a Question?

A thesis statement for an academic essay or research paper should not be in the form of a question. A thesis statement should be in statement form and outline the purpose or angle of the piece of writing.

A question does not accurately identify the purpose of the paper and leaves a question in the mind of the reader. A thesis statement should clearly identify the specific matter the writer plans to argue, explore, analyze or evaluate. The thesis statement should serve as a road map for the remainder of the paper, and the content of the essay should refer back to the main idea within the thesis throughout the body paragraphs.
