The practice tests were initially created and made available in the spring of 2013 and updated in May of 2014. They were created with the purpose of giving students, teachers, parents and individuals with an interest in Common Core assessment method a means of becoming familiar with the kinds of questions found on the test.

Training tests that are provided are not intended to gauge performance. Rather, they are meant to give students and teachers a chance to understand how the software and navigation tools they can expect to use on the actual test function. SBAC recommends that people taking the year end assessment should take both the practice test and the training test at least once.

Other preparations materials found on the website including manuals, user guides, classroom activities and scoring guides for all grade levels. The scoring materials include a rubric for grading the writing performance task. Further items include examples of calculators allowed by grade level and a Frequently Asked Questions reference.
