The NCLEX-PN is the test required in all 50 states in order to be a Licensed Practical or Licensed Vocational Nurse. This is the first step in starting a nursing career and provides experience in NCLEX testing if an RN degree is pursued.
Studying for the test is important. The exam is administered on a computer and varies from student to student. The test questions are based on whether or not the previous question's answer is correct or incorrect, with incorrect answers generating more questions in the same area. This type test determines if the student knows the material or not. Questions answered correctly lead to questions that are more difficult until the computer determines the subject is adequately understood.
Each question counts as a point. Scores must be between 85 and 205 to pass. Licensing boards do not receive student's scores, only whether or not it was passed. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing provides information on registration, exam locations, fees and other helpful tips. The NCSBN also has information on what to do after the exam in order to start working as an LPN.
