The Social Security Administration and BabyCenter provide lists of the most popular baby girl names in 2012. The SSA database tool allows users to search by year. BabyCenter compares the most popular baby girl names from the SSA national database to the most popular names among BabyCenter users.
The SSA search tool displays up to 1,000 of the most popular names per year for each year after 1879. The database also provides statistical data for each name. For example, Sofia was the most popular baby girl name of 2012. Approximately 1.15 percent of baby girls, or 22,245 female babies, received the name.
BabyCenter displays two lists of the top 40 most popular names for 2012. The BabyCenter rankings differ from the SSA ones. Though Sofia was most popular nationally, Emma was the most popular baby girl name in 2012 among parents surveyed by the site.
