High school students typically are allowed to select their own schedules. However, depending on the grade of the student, course availability, and prerequisite requirements, there are limitations on how much flexibility is allowed.
By high school, many students have a stronger vision of what they would like to do as adults and allowing students to select the courses they take gives them an active role in preparing for their future. While a high school diploma requires certain courses that must be taken, high school students are able to choose elective courses that reflect their interests. A high school counselor is a good source of information and advice regarding which courses are necessary and which electives are suitable.
