There are many universities and colleges that offer online early childhood education, or ECE, programs, which students can enroll in to obtain different types of degrees, ranging from an associates to a master's degree. Early Childhood Teacher lists more than 80 schools on its website that have online programs and classes, as of 2015.
To get teacher certification, students need to enroll in an accredited school, such as the University of North Dakota, Arizona State University or California State University at Fullerton. These schools have online early childhood education programs.
Although students take most of the coursework online in these programs, they may need to also complete a teaching practicum. For example, at North Dakota University, all courses are offered online for a master's degree in ECE, but students must also take a 60-hour teaching practicum at an approved location or school where they live.
Once students complete all these requirements, they receive their degrees and can then apply for licensure in their particular state. However, each state can have its own set of requirements to grant teacher certification and licensure.
