A cab over tractor, also called a cab over or cab over engine, is a body style of truck with a flat front and a cab that sits over the front axle. Cab over designs normally place the engine behind the cab that tilts forward to allow access.
Conventional truck designs place the engine in front of the driver. The cab over design is popular in the light- and medium-duty truck categories. Cab over designs generally allow trucks to have shorter wheel bases and shorter overall lengths. This allows a truck to retain its overall length classification while increasing the length of the cargo area. However, the cab over design is less aerodynamic and results in a smaller cab area than other designs, and truckers claim that the shorter wheel base is less safe and provides for a less comfortable ride.
