Some top-rated boarding schools for trouble teens in the United States are River View Christian Academy in California, Ironwood in Maine and Discovery Academy in Utah. Though these schools differ in their methods, each tries to help teens learn useful life skills over a period of several months.
River View Christian Academy is a nonprofit organization that seeks to help teens with behavioural problems. It is part of the Teen Rescue program and provides services to teenagers of all backgrounds, regardless of their religious beliefs, for an average of eighteen months.
Ironwood's program is based on nine- to 12-month residencies in which troubled teens receive help with their academic studies and their mental health. This institution provides students with opportunities to take part in various extracurricular activities and daily therapy sessions. In therapy, teens learn to rely on themselves for emotional control and support, develop healthy relationships with students and counsellors, and prepare themselves for integration back into their communities.
Utah's Discovery Academy prides itself on single-gender facilities with controlled interaction between the two groups. It provides round-the-clock therapeutic assistance for its small groups of no more than 32 girls and 50 boys while encouraging them to push their boundaries.
