CRST trucking school applicants are expected to have a CDL permit before classes begin, and schools often assist applicants in the process of obtaining one. A passport is also required, as drivers are sometimes required to cross the Canadian border. Additionally, applicants need a HazMat endorsement; any certification fees are paid by CRST. Double- and triple-trailer endorsements are encouraged but not required.

Students are asked to bring their driver's license, Social Security card, employment documentation and a voided check to classes. Presentation of a birth certificate and, if applicable, immigration documentation, are also required.

Requirements for training include work boots, an atlas, a truck stop guide and a calculator. CRST suggests bringing a week's worth of clothes, any necessary toiletries, any required medication and bedding. An alarm clock, flashlight and writing materials are also suggested.

Classes run two to four weeks and are held at CRST's Iowa training facility in conjunction with select driver training schools across the United States. After graduation, a four-day orientation program is required. Upon completion, graduates are paired with CRST lead drivers for intensive on-the-job training. When training is complete, a CDL A license is granted to the student.
