Online application systems generally provide application-tracking numbers, sometimes called application ID numbers. While some smaller application systems may not, most universities and other large organizations that accept applications typically assign application-tracking numbers.
Application-tracking numbers usually display on the confirmation page that appears after the applicant submits the online application. Most online systems that require users to create an account or otherwise provide an email address also send applicants a confirmation email that includes the tracking number. Many organizations assign application-tracking numbers even when an applicant submits a paper application or applies in person. If the organization does not assign the tracking number when the application is submitted, it often mails the number to the applicant at a later date.
