As of the 2014 to 2015 school year, the Advanced Placement Physics B exam has been replaced by the two new courses: A.P. Physics 1 and A.P. Physics 2. The free-response section of the exam has three types of questions: experimental design, qualitative and quantitative translation and short-answer questions.
The free-response section of the A.P. Physics exam makes up 50 percent of the total exam score. Students have 90 minutes to complete it. The experimental design question pertains to designing and describing an investigation, an analysis of authentic lab data and observations to identify patterns or explain phenomena. The qualitative and quantitative translation question requires translating between quantitative and qualitative justification and reasoning. It has three short-answer questions, which require a paragraph-length coherent argument.
