The AP English language and composition test is partially multiple choice. There is a segment in which students read a short passage and answer multiple choice questions about it, as well as a free response segment that requires writing short essays.
The multiple choice segment of the exam has students read four short passages and answer questions pertaining to each. These questions test the students' understanding of basic academic terminology and their ability to read and comprehend both literal and intended meanings of the text. This portion of the test accounts for 45 percent of the total score. It is anticipated to take up 1 hour of the overall 195-minute exam period.
