Literacy Planet is a software-based program that teaches kids spelling and reading skills primarily through interactive activities and games. These activities and games contain animated characters, scenarios and a quest-style structure to engage students, while at the same time teaching them to recognize and put together words.
As of 2015, the program provides more than 15,000 exercises that align with Australia's educational standards, and the activities aim at kids up to 15 years of age. Some of the activities also come with a single player or multiplayer option, the latter allowing several students from different parts of the world to compete in reading and spelling via the program's online format. Single players are able to personalize the experience by customizing their own avatars.
All activities come under an over-arching quest structure that provides mini games, virtual shopping and credit earning potential. The exercises teach rudimentary skills such as the alphabet, phonics, sight words, reading and comprehension, as well as basic spelling and grammar. Teachers and students can choose year levels that correspond to students' grades to provide age-appropriate animation and content. After the successful completion of each exercise, students earn credit that they can use to play the mini games or customize their avatars.
