Insurers classify particular jobs in order to determine the appropriate compensation value to allow for injured workers, Class Codes states. The codes differ from state to state, but most states use the class codes created by the National Council on Compensation Insurance, an independent advisory organization. The only states that don't use this class codes system are California, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Some states have additional codes beyond those used in the NCCI system.
