Full Answer

Physicians, health insurance companies and hospitals can choose to use Blue Button technology to allow patients to access their own medical files via the healthcare providers' websites. Medicare beneficiaries also have access to the Blue Button system, as of 2015. Patients whose doctors or pharmacies have not yet switched to using electronic health records still have a right to access all of their medical records via hard copies, thanks to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
