A forklift certificate is obtained by completing a folklift driving course and a safety course through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Additional training may be offered by an employer if required.
OSHA safety courses for forklift driving include a written test, but some instructors may also require passing a driving skills test to pass the course. To keep a certificate, OSHA requires a refresher course be taken once every three years. Not all employers require a forklift operator to be certified, but some offer pay increases for certified employees. OSHA safety courses also apply to powered trucks and other heavy equipment.
