To use the 1040EZ tax table, taxpayers locate the amount of their taxable income and look down the appropriate filing status column to find the taxable income amount. The amount shown where the filing status and taxable income meet is the tax due.
To determine taxable income, 1040EZ users need to fill out lines 1 through 5 on the form. Once the calculations from those lines are completed, the resulting amount on line 6 is the filer's taxable income. The amount of tax to be paid, based on the tax table, is entered on line 10 of the form.
The 1040EZ income tax return can only be used by single filers or married couples with no dependents who are filing jointly. Taxpayers who use form 1040EZ cannot itemize deductions or claim any income adjustments or tax credits. They can claim the Earned Income Credit. A complete instruction booklet that details who is eligible to use the 1040EZ form and includes line-by-line explanations, an Earned Income Credit worksheet and the tax table is available as a PDF download from the Forms & Pubs section of the Internal Revenue Service website. A fillable PDF of the 1040EZ form is also available on the IRS website.
