Good writing paper is uncoated and has a 24-pound or 28-pound weight. These qualities allow the ink to dry by absorbing into the paper, and the high quality of the paper allows it to remain intact with frequent handling. This type of paper may also have a watermark.
Good writing paper can have a smooth, laid or linen finish. Paper with a smooth finish does not have a manufactured texture. Paper with a laid finish has a horizontal and vertical texture called chain lines. A linen finish adds a very subtle texture to good writing paper. Other finishes on good writing paper include vellum, eggshell, antique and parchment. Acid-free paper does not yellow or disintegrate as quickly as paper made with acid-producing chemicals.
