The two main types of air conditioner jobs are service technician jobs and installation technician jobs. Service technicians work on repairing and maintaining HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) units, while installation technicians solely focus on the installation of new HVAC units.
Becoming an air conditioning service or installation technician requires education in the field, whether through training, a degree program or an apprenticeship. Certification to handle ozone-depleting refrigerants is also required as part of federal regulations. Depending on the certification level received, it is possible to qualify for work on automotive, low-pressure, high-pressure and other air conditioning systems that utilize ozone-depleting refrigerants.
