Nationwide Building Society offers its customers the ability to use its cards at many international merchants that accept Visa cards, as of 2015. It also offers travelers the ability to process charges in local currency or sterling as well as optional travelers insurance on select accounts.
Customers who have an account with Nationwide are able to use the associated cards at numerous retailers throughout the European Union as well as many merchants internationally, as long as the merchant accept payments from cards that contain the Visa logo, or that of a similar backing institution. When the member swipes her card at the merchant, she can also request to process the transaction in sterling rather than local currency using a process known as Dynamic Currency Conversion. In this process, the merchant uses its own exchange rate to determine the appropriate cost of the transaction, which may result in higher costs than the rate Nationwide imposes on foreign charges.
Many of the accounts with Nationwide also include free traveler's insurance or the option to purchase it, which helps protect the cardholder from fraudulent charges or financial loss due to theft. Nationwide also offers customers fraud protection on international purchases. As such, customers traveling to another country should also contact Nationwide to inform a representative about the plans to avoid accidental account suspension.
