Your federal income tax return appears in the Where's My Refund tool once the IRS receives it. This can take 24 hours after e-filing or four weeks after mailing a paper tax return, notes the IRS. The tool tracks your return with updates as the IRS process the return. The status updates only once every 24 hours, so checking more frequently is not necessary.

The return goes through three phases on the Where's My Refund tool, says the IRS. The possible statuses include Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Once the IRS approves the refund, Where's My Refund shows the personalized date when you should expect to see the money. The actual money may take one to five days to appear in your bank account with direct deposit.

The Where's My Refund tool does not show statuses for amended tax returns. The IRS provides a separate tool called Where's My Amended Return for taxpayers who file amended returns. This tool shows information starting about three weeks after filing the amended return.
