The Wounded Warrior Project helps injured veterans and their families with depression counselling, physical rehabilitation programs and employment assistance with the goal of helping families reunite successfully.

The Disabled American Veterans organization assists veterans in accessing federal benefits that were earned during their military service. The DAV employs over 650 people to accomplish this task, most of them being disabled veterans.

The Fisher House Foundation is best known for providing comfort homes, located near military and Veteran's Administration hospitals, that give families a place to stay while a member is receiving medical treatment. Along the same lines, Homes for Our Troops focuses on building permanent, mortgage free, homes specially designed for multiple amputees and soldiers suffering from traumatic brain trauma.

The United Service Organization is chartered by congress, but is not part of the federal government. The USO is most commonly associated with care packages and entertainment shows it provides for active duty troops. However, it also operates over 135 facilities and 10 mobile canteens worldwide, as of 2015, that provide a variety of services for armed forces members and their families. USO services include free Internet and email, reading and game rooms, nurseries, family support groups and housing assistance.
