Some of the top-selling products in retail stores include Coca Cola, Lay’s Potato Chips, the “Harry Potter” book series, the Apple iPhone and the Sony PlayStation, as of 2014. These ubiquitous products all boast sales figures numbering in the millions or billions.
Coca Cola ranks as the world’s top-selling product, selling approximately 1.8 billion servings of the soda each day. To put the figure in perspective, this equates to one Coke each for around a quarter of the world’s population. In the realm of junk food, Lay’s Potato Chips comes in second, selling an estimated 633 million bags of chips annually.
J.K. Rowling’s enormously popular “Harry Potter” series isn’t just one of the best-selling book series of all time, it’s one of the best-selling consumer items, period. The boy wizard’s books have sold around 450 million copies since debuting in 1997, a figure that nearly rivals the total number of books sold worldwide in 2013.
In the world of consumer electronics, Apple’s iPhone and iPad both rank as some of the top-selling items. Around 516 million iPhones have been sold since the device first debuted in 2007. Similarly, the iPad has sold around 211 million units since its introduction in 2010.
Though not quite as staggering, Sony’s PlayStation video game console is another major seller. The various incarnations of the popular game system have sold around 344 million units since the original PlayStation debuted in 1995.
