Dental lab technicians require a two-year degree or certificate from an accredited institution, according to the American Dental Association. Prospective dental lab technicians must also pass a certification exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology. The exam includes theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills. After certification, technicians may choose to specialize in orthodontics, ceramics, complete dentures, partial dentures or crowns and bridges.
