Others include American Assets Trust Inc., Select Income REIT, Cousins Properties Inc. and Washington REIT.
REITs are companies that own income-producing properties, such as nursing homes, hospitals, hotels and other types of properties, explains the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. REITs may hold a variety of different assets, including residential, health care, office, retail or industrial companies. To qualify for REIT organization, the trust must be made mainly of real estate holdings and distribute at least 90 percent of its income to its shareholders via regular dividend payments. Generally, REITs also manage the properties they own.
