It is important to write a performance rebuttal quickly after receiving any negative reviews, to avoid procrastination, anxiety and loss of bonus and promotion possibilities. Make sure you know the proper procedure and format for any rebuttal, and be aware of any deadlines that may exist.
If the negative review is warranted by an honest mistake or oversight, a face-to-face meeting with the reviewer may alleviate the problem before it becomes a permanent part of your record. If you are not satisfied, or if a face-to-face meeting seems unlikely to yield the desired result, write a rebuttal based on as many facts as possible. Refute any negative statements objectively so that the reader can decide based upon the facts, not feelings.
