Plug preparation is the first step. Plug preparation requires a plug of the same shape as the product part. The worker needs to cover wood and plaster plugs with lacquer or resin, and later buff the plug. The worker then applies a thin amount of paint onto the surface of the plug.
The next step involves applying gelcoat to make the product tough and resistant to damage. Gelcoat comes in the colors black or orange, and the worker sprays the product onto the plug. The first part of this fiberglassing step is putting down 1 ounce of chopped strand mat and adding resin. The worker next uses a brush or spreader to add water to the mat and then allows the mat to cure.
Removing the plug involves using a plastic wedge or similar item to separate the mold and the plug. This step takes place a couple of days after starting the curing process. The worker sands and polishes the mold to complete the process.Learn more about Manufacturing
