Tax-preparation checklists are available online from the Internal Revenue Service, H&R Block and TurboTax. The checklists instruct taxpayers to assemble information about their identities, incomes and potential deductions and credits. Taxpayers who use computer software to track expenses can print an annual report with much of this information, notes TurboTax.

Individuals who claim a child-care tax credit must determine the provider's tax identification number and the total amount paid, explains the IRS.
