An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a tax number used for business purposes. An EIN is necessary to start a new business, open a business banking account, apply for a business license, file taxes or hire employees.
This portion of the IRS website where you can apply for an EIN is only available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. Before beginning the online application, you will need to gather some basic information about your business. First, you will need to know the legal structure of your business or organization. Types of legal structures include sole proprietor, partnership, corporation, limited liability company, estate and trust. You will also need to provide an address for your business or organization.
Once you have completed the online application, the IRS will automatically generate an EIN. You can immediately open a bank account and begin other activities necessary to operate your business. It will take two weeks for your EIN to become part of the IRS's permanent records. If you do not choose to apply online, you can apply through the mail or visit an IRS service center in your state. These processes take much longer to complete.Learn more about Taxes
