To submit an online tax return, create and log into a myGov account, reports the Australian Taxation Office. Answer an online pre-lodgment questionnaire to determine whether you should use the simplified myTax program or the more complex E-tax program. Use the pre-filling service to complete part of your tax return automatically by uploading information from private organizations and government agencies, check the pre-filled information against your records, fill any gaps, and submit your return.
To create a myGov account, provide your tax file number and your passport, citizenship certificate or birth certificate, explains the Australian Taxation Office. After entering the necessary information and submitting your application, call the ATO number provided on the website to receive a unique linking code. Log in to myGov, select the Service page, click on I Have a Linking Code, and submit the code to verify your account.
You have from July 1 to Oct. 31 to submit your tax return each year, according to the Australian Taxation Office. Organizations usually submit information for pre-filling by early August, and the data is available online within a few days. Information you can pre-fill includes your salary, interest and dividends from financial institutions, and details of private health insurance. The pre-filled information automatically goes into the correct spaces where it must appear on the return. If you find mistakes and change pre-filled information on your return, notify the organization so it can change its records before you file the return.
