While the holiday shopping season officially begins on the Friday following Thanksgiving, a day known as Black Friday, many retailers consider Thanksgiving day to be the unofficial beginning of the holiday retail season. Here’s a list of major retailers that will be open, as well as those that will remain closed, on Thanksgiving 2017.
Open for Business
Retailers that will be open on Thanksgiving in 2017 include Macy’s, which will open at 5:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Walmart, which will open at 6:00 p.m. on the holiday, and Target, which will open at 6:00 p.m. Other stores open on Thanksgiving will include Best Buy, which will be opening at 5:00 p.m., Sears, which will be opening at 6:00 p.m., and Kohls, which will open at 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
Many major retailers have announced their plans to remain closed on Thanksgiving in order to let employees have the day off. Among these retailers are Designer Shoe Warehouse, Guitar Center, Hobby Lobby, IKEA, Cabela’s, Patagonia, Game Stop, and Neiman Marcus. Also remaining closed will be OfficeMax, Sam’s Club, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Half Price Books.
CBL Properties, which owns and operates 62 malls throughout the United States, has announced that all locations will be closed on Thanksgiving 2017. Other retailers that have announced their intentions to stay closed on Thanksgiving are Home Depot, Pier 1, H&M, Nordstrom, and Costco.
Shoppers in the New England states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine will not be able to take advantage of Thanksgiving holiday sales, as retailers in these states are legally prevented from opening on Thanksgiving. The laws, called Blue Laws, prevent retailers from opening prior to midnight on the day after Thanksgiving. However, stores such as gas stations, small grocery stores, and restaurants are permitted to stay open on the holiday. In these states, Target, Best Buy, and Walmart will all open at 1:00 a.m. on Friday November 24.
