The Anne and Hope Curtain & Bath Outlet is a discount retailer with locations in three New England states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, as of 2015. The store has window treatment, bedding, bath, rug and furniture departments. The company buys merchandise in bulk so that it can offer savings to its customers, innovating a number of common retail practices in order to keep its costs down.
Sample products available from the Anne and Hope Curtain & Bath Outlet include tables, accent chairs, towels, bedspreads and curtains. Some locations also include Dollar Outlets or Garden Outlets that increase the selection of products offered. The store has two locations in Connecticut. One is located in Newington at 2631 Berlin Turnpike, while the other is in Vernon at 295 Hartford Turnpike. The company also has two locations in Rhode Island and nine in Massachusetts.
Innovations by the retailer include one centralized checkout location and the use of shopping carts in a discount store setting. The company once sold a variety of merchandise ranging from sporting goods to stereos, but has downsized in order to remain competitive in the modern marketplace.
The company adopted its name from a ship, the "Anne and Hope," which was lost at sea off of the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island, in 1806. The founders, father and son tandem Martin and Irwin Chase, started the company in 1953. Martin originally ran a ribbon business from the third floor of the Anne and Hope building, but found his merchandise obsolete as cheaper ribbon became available. He offered his remaining merchandise at discounted prices to the other tenants in the building, accidentally becoming a discount retailer. As of 2015, the store is run by the second and third generations of its founding family.
