As of February 2015, TSX has the second largest number of security listings of any stock exchange in the world, and it is the eighth largest exchange in the world in terms of market capitalization. In addition, the Toronto Stock Exchange lists more oil, gas and mining companies than any other exchange in the world. As of June 2014, there were just over 1,500 companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, which in total had a combined market capitalization of almost CAD 2.6 trillion. While there are numerous companies and stocks that are only listed on the TSX, many of the listed companies also have a comparative listing on another world stock exchange, such as the New York Stock Exchange.

The Toronto Stock Exchange was founded in 1861, and in 1997 TSX became the second stock exchange in North America to move to a fully electronic or virtual trading environment after it closed its trading floor.
