Start the Employment Insurance registration process by clicking the Apply for Employment Insurance link under the I Want To heading on the left side of the ServiceCanada.gc.ca home page, as indicated on the website. Read the information, including the Privacy Notice Statement, and then click the Start Application link at the bottom of the page. Respond to the question by selecting No, and then click Continue.
On the Type of Employment Insurance Application page, select Benefits for Employees or Benefits for Self-Employed People, as detailed in the instructions. A person who held an insurable job can apply for employment insurance if the job loss was not the fault of the applicant. Self-employed people who voluntarily registered in the Employment Insurance program can apply for employment insurance. Employment insurance benefits are also available to individuals who are pregnant, sick, or caring for a newborn child, adopted child or seriously ill family member.
Employee applicants are taken to a Reference Code page that provides a list of group categories and asks if the applicant received a reference code, according to the website. Self-employed applicants go to a Benefit Type page to select the correct benefit. Options include sickness, maternity, parental, compassionate care and benefits for parents of critically ill children. Select an option, and follow the prompts to complete the Employment Insurance registration process.
